How many lessons do I need?

If you are a beginner, and have never driven a car before, research from the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) has shown that on average a minimum of 40 hours tuition with a driving instructor is required to pass your practical test. However, this is only an average. Everyone is different in how quickly they progress. So you may need less or you may need more. After the first couple of lessons, the instructor will give you their professional opinion as to how many lessons you will need in order to pass your practical test.

What if I have some driving experience already?

You will not need as many lessons as a beginner. After the initial assessment lesson, the instructor will have a look at what you already know and can do and also point out what you need to learn to be ready for the practical test. Then they will make a recommendation as to how many lessons you need.

What if I have a licence in another country?

Although you can already drive, to pass the practical test in this country, you need to take driving lessons to get used to the roads here. Also, the standard of driving required to pass your practical test in this country is probably the highest in the world. If you have been driving for a few years, the likelihood is that you have developed bad habits. To pass the practical test you need to correct them. That is where the driving lessons come in. We recommend you take an assessment lesson to begin with, and then take at least one lesson per week to brush up on your skills and get rid of those bad habits. At the same time start preparing for your theory test by taking theory lessons at our office. Once the theory test is passed book your practical test and carry on with your lessons until the test date. This way you will probably pass the practical test first time.

Can I just take one or two lessons before my practical test?

You can and as long as you can drive the car safely then you can hire the instructor's car for the test. However, you will probably fail the test. Some cut back on lessons to save money. But in the long run, after failing a few tests they realise that it's actually cost more. So if you can afford it, try and take the recommended amount of lessons before your test as then you will stand a better chance of passing it first time.

Do I need tuition for my theory test?

No. Your actual Theory Test will be done on a computer at a DSA Test Centre. You can buy a set of CD's called “Driving Test Success (Theory Edition)”. These CDs exactly replicate the actual Theory Test. They contain the identical question bank (1,000 questions and answers) that the DSA use. It also contains similar clips for the Hazard Perception part of the Theory Test, so that you can practice. We recommend the programme as in our experience it is very difficult to pass the Hazard Perception part if you’ve never practiced with the CDs. Once you have used the programme the pass rate gets close to 100% With proper use and study of the Driving Test Success (Theory Edition) you can both time and money.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a widely recognised scheme that is open to newly qualified drivers. Statistics have shown that newly qualified drivers are more vulnerable than experienced drivers. Pass Plus offers professional instruction, helping new drivers to gain quality experience, become more skilful drivers, develop a positive driving style and reduce their risk of being involved in an accident. Additionally many motor insurance companies offer greatly reduced insurance policies to new drivers who have completed the Pass Plus scheme. All of our Approved Driving Instructors at DrivethruL are registered to offer Pass Plus tuition for those candidates that have successfully passed the practical driving test.
